Tropical Low 12U: Cyclone Threat to Queensland Coast (2026)

Get ready for a powerful weather event! A tropical low, named 12U, is brewing in the Coral Sea and is set to bring some serious impacts to northern Queensland. But here's the kicker: it's predicted to intensify into a cyclone before making landfall this weekend.

This slow-moving system will head towards the tropical coast tonight and is likely to cross between Cairns and Ayr on Saturday night or early Sunday. And here's where it gets controversial: the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says the region's already saturated conditions will experience the same impacts, regardless of whether it officially becomes a tropical cyclone.

The BoM warns that the wet soil increases the risk of tree falls and landslides, which could cause significant damage. A cyclone warning is in place for an area stretching from Port Douglas to Tully, including Cairns and Innisfail, but the severe weather warning extends even further, covering a 1000km stretch of coastline from Hope Vale to Mackay.

The potential for flooding rain is a major concern, especially as it's expected to move south from Townsville. Damaging winds are also forecast to extend along the coast on Saturday, shifting to the east and northeast south of 12U in the afternoon and evening. Conditions may start to improve north of Innisfail by Saturday evening, but other areas, including the Herbert and Lower Burdekin regions and the Central Coast and Whitsundays, could see persistent conditions into Sunday.

The BoM emphasizes that the rainfall totals and warning areas are dependent on the development and position of the tropical low. So, it's crucial to stay informed and keep an eye on further warnings as the system moves closer to the coast.
