Siemens & SBS Transit Extend Downtown Line Service: 22 Years of Reliable Singapore Metro (2026)

Siemens Mobility and SBS Transit have expanded their Long-Term Service Support (LTSS) deal for the signaling system powering Singapore’s Downtown Line (DTL), one of the globe’s most dependable metro networks and a cornerstone of the city-state’s high-capacity public transport. The performance-based contract spans 22 years, from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2047, and covers obsolescence management, technology refreshes and upgrades, including security-related enhancements. The fully automated DTL stretches roughly 44 kilometers across 37 stations.

“We’re excited to broaden our collaboration with SBS Transit,” stated Elmar Zeiler, CEO of Siemens Mobility Customer Services. “By merging lifecycle services with proactive obsolescence control, targeted technology refreshes, and security upgrades, the signaling system will stay technically current, highly available, and fully integrated with the existing infrastructure for more than two decades.”

This contract builds on the LTSS framework awarded in May 2024, which covers spare-parts support, technical assistance, and obsolescence monitoring. Together, these agreements establish a long-term framework wherein Siemens Mobility—original equipment manufacturer for the DTL signaling system—provides lifecycle management services that support safer and more reliable operations through 2047.

Proactive obsolescence management: securing a critical asset

A key feature of the agreement is shifting from reactive to proactive obsolescence management. All current and anticipated obsolescence affecting the DTL signaling subsystems and components will be identified in advance and mitigated through structured actions. This includes assessing and detailing the development and qualification work needed for suitable redesigns, implementing redesigns at the subsystem or component level, and introducing qualified replacement parts into applicable signaling equipment. Siemens Mobility will continuously monitor component lifecycles and adjust spare-parts inventories accordingly. Going forward, proactive obsolescence monitoring will ensure long-term operational support, backed by an adequate spare-parts stock and ongoing lifecycle surveillance to prevent future disruptions. By preserving the consistency of the DTL signaling system, commuters benefit from a reliable and efficient public transport network.

Long-term resilience of the network

The new service contract also incorporates structured system updates to meet evolving security requirements over the contract term. Siemens Mobility will regularly review system performance and configuration to ensure that new or updated hardware and software components remain compatible with the local operating environment and can be integrated without compromising existing functionality.
