Former Democratic Representative Mary Peltola is making a bold move by entering the Alaska Senate race, offering Democrats a strong candidate to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. In a powerful video announcement, Peltola highlights the changing landscape of Alaska, from a land of abundance to one facing scarcity, with the decline of natural resources impacting the state's food security.
"Alaska's natural treasures, like salmon and migratory birds, are becoming harder to find, forcing Alaskans to rely more on expensive groceries," Peltola explains. With this personal connection to the state's challenges, Peltola aims to represent Alaska's interests in the Senate.
Peltola's political journey is an intriguing one. She first made history as the first Alaska Native elected to Congress, winning a special election and a full term in 2022. However, her re-election bid in 2024 fell short by a narrow margin, as President Trump's influence carried the state by a significant 13-point margin.
The road to a Democratic Senate majority is a challenging one, requiring the party to defend battleground states and flip at least four Republican-held states, including those where Trump won by double digits. This is a tall order, as the party currently has no senators from these states.
But Democrats are optimistic. They believe former Senator Sherrod Brown could make Ohio competitive, and they're eyeing potential upsets in Iowa and Texas. Peltola, with her name recognition, fundraising abilities, and bipartisan credentials, is seen as a key player in making the Alaska race a competitive one.
In her launch video, Peltola pays tribute to two late Republican icons from Alaska, including her predecessor in the House, as examples of putting Alaska's interests first. "Our delegation used to stand up to partisanship and prioritize Alaska's needs," she says. "Ted Stevens and Don Young fought for public media and disaster relief, recognizing their importance to our state."
Peltola, a former member of the centrist Blue Dog Coalition, ran her first campaign with the slogan "fish, family, freedom," a message she echoes in her Senate bid. She emphasizes her support for gun rights, noting her ownership of 176 long guns, and her commitment to abortion rights. In her 2024 race, Peltola faced attacks from Republicans for her support of President Biden.
In her campaign launch, Peltola speaks out against a "rigged system" and advocates for term limits. She also references Trump's "America First" slogan, challenging Alaskans to lead by example: "Ted Stevens often said, 'To hell with politics, put Alaska first.' It's time we show the country what 'Alaska First' and 'America First' truly mean."
Senator Sullivan, a Marine veteran with Trump's endorsement, is well-prepared for a competitive race. His campaign has nearly $4.8 million in funds, according to recent filings. Sullivan was first elected in 2014, defeating Democratic Senator Mark Begich by a narrow 2-point margin. He won re-election in 2020 with a wider 13-point victory over independent Al Gross.
While Sullivan has largely supported Trump's agenda, including the "big, beautiful" tax and spending measure, he recently joined Democrats in supporting an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies. This move could be a strategic one, especially as Democrats have already started attacking Sullivan on the airwaves, spending a combined $3.1 million on ads so far.
GOP groups have also invested nearly $1.5 million in ads.
The Alaska Senate race is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with Peltola's unique background and bipartisan approach potentially making it a key battleground in the fight for Senate control.
