Amorim targets another demanding showdown at Wolves as United’s coach calls for sharper improvement
Ruben Amorim has urged Manchester United to raise their level before facing Wolves, describing the upcoming fixture as a “tough match” while noting Wolves will end their winless run eventually.
After a promising five-match unbeaten stretch, United’s mood soured by recent results at Old Trafford, including a 1-0 defeat to a 10-man Everton and a 1-1 draw with a relegation-haunted West Ham that drew boos at full time.
Wolves arrive bottom of the table with just two points from 14 league games, making Monday’s trip a chance for United to demonstrate resilience against a side still searching for form.
“Anything can happen in the Premier League, and it can change at any moment,” Amorim said. “There’s no club in Premier League history that hasn’t won a game at some point, so it could be any game.” He added that United must improve, rest players when needed, and prepare for a difficult test, stressing that his team always faces a stern challenge.
Amorim spoke with evident frustration after United conceded a late, avoidable goal at West Ham, his post-match remarks then carrying into the pre-match briefing for the Wolves game at Molineux.
During questions about Kobbie Mainoo’s playing time and claims of a lack of trust in the academy, Amorim pushed back, defending his selection choices. He cited the presence of other international players on the bench and the need to field the most prepared squad to win games.
Attention turns to the players who will soon depart for the Africa Cup of Nations—Diallo, Mbeumo, and Mazraoui—leaving the squad thinner ahead of January discussions about reinforcements.
Amorim remains focused on the immediate task, stressing that January decisions are for later and that the current priority is improving and winning the next match with the squad available.
Benjamin Sesko’s potential return from injury would bolster United’s attack if he is fit by then, though Amorim dismissed speculation about transfer considerations for the moment, reiterating a need to prepare for the next challenge with the players at hand.
