Kimi Antonelli's Frustrating Qatar GP: A Late Mistake and a Missed Podium
Kimi Antonelli's frustration was palpable as he reflected on his late mistake during the Qatar Grand Prix, which allowed Lando Norris to pass him for fourth place. The Mercedes driver, who had been in top form with two podiums in Brazil and Las Vegas, struggled to replicate that success at the high-speed Lusail International Circuit. Despite qualifying fifth, Antonelli's race took a turn for the worse due to a slow pit stop and a snap of oversteer, which prevented him from challenging for the podium.
The pivotal moment came on Lap 56 when Antonelli ran wide and drifted off the track while battling Carlos Sainz's dirty air. This allowed Norris to sail past and demote Antonelli to P5. Antonelli admitted, "It was a pretty frustrating race. We were unlucky with the pit stop, and I was stuck in Carlos' dirty air, struggling to get close. I'm annoyed with that. With two laps to go, I lost the rear and went off track, which was a mistake."
The Mercedes team's strategy of double-stacking their drivers for the two mandatory pit stops backfired, as Antonelli's slow stop had a knock-on effect on teammate George Russell, who had already lost positions on the opening lap. Russell, who finished sixth, highlighted the impact of dirty air, saying, "I didn't realize how much it affected us. I spent 55 laps within 1.5s behind cars. When Hadjar got a puncture, I went one second a lap faster, and it was a pretty boring race."
Despite the setbacks, Antonelli remained positive, acknowledging the need for improvement, especially with his driving style. He concluded, "At this kind of track, I need to work more, but overall, we took a good step over the weekend."
The race's close margins and the impact of factors like dirty air and pit stop strategies underscore the fine line between success and failure in Formula 1. As the championship fight intensifies, Antonelli and Mercedes will need to find solutions to improve their racing performance and secure better results.
