Prepare to be captivated! A treasure trove of Jacqueline du Pré's life is about to be unveiled. Her siblings, Piers du Pré and Hilary Finzi, are opening up a remarkable collection of memorabilia for auction, offering an intimate glimpse into the life of the legendary cellist.
This isn't just any auction; it's a journey through du Pré's world, filled with personal touches and artistic brilliance. The first part of the auction is scheduled for December 5, 2025. It will showcase a variety of items, including never-before-heard recordings, concert dresses that graced the stage, four cello bridges, and the original certificate for her 1712 ‘Davidov’ Stradivari from W.E Hill and sons. Even her childhood teddy bear will be up for grabs!
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, where opinions might differ: the auction also includes items that are deeply personal.
The second part of the auction, slated for March 13, 2026, promises an even deeper dive. Hundreds of unseen photographs will be available, capturing moments throughout du Pré's life. This includes photos from her time studying with Pablo Casals in Zermatt in 1960 and 1961, and with Mstislav Rostropovich in Moscow in 1966. Family photos, including those from her wedding to Daniel Barenboim, will also be on display.
And this is the part most people miss... the auction will also feature the original print of the photograph that graced the cover of The Strad’s January 2025 issue.
This auction is a unique opportunity to connect with du Pré's legacy on a personal level. What do you think about the idea of personal items being auctioned? Do you believe it's a fitting tribute, or does it cross a line? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
