Three Dirtbags Shine in the World Baseball Classic: A Long Beach State Success Story
The 2026 World Baseball Classic is set to showcase the best players in the world, and three former Long Beach State Dirtbags are ready to make their mark. Outfielder Jarren Duran, infielder Jonathon Long, and right-handed pitcher Vance Worley have been selected to represent Mexico, Chinese Taipei, and Great Britain, respectively.
Long Beach State head coach TJ Bruce is proud of his alumni's achievements, stating, 'It's a big deal to have the Dirtbag name and brand out there, and these guys embody what it means to be a Dirtbag.'
Duran, an established MLB All-Star with the Boston Red Sox, is making his second appearance at the WBC for Team Mexico. After a limited role in the 2023 Classic, he's now a key contributor, hitting .583 with three homers in 12 at-bats during Spring Training.
Long, a top prospect for the Chicago Cubs, is on the cusp of his MLB debut. However, he had to withdraw from the WBC due to an elbow sprain, prioritizing his health and the upcoming season.
Worley, a 38-year-old right-hander, is back with Team Great Britain for his second WBC appearance. He played his last MLB game in 2017, ending an eight-year career with five organizations.
Bruce recalls Worley's impact during his time at Long Beach State, praising his competitiveness and professionalism.
Great Britain's WBC journey begins on Friday, March 6, against Mexico in Pool B. The game will be played at Daikin Park in Houston at 10 a.m. PT.
In other news, Long Beach State alum Jeff McNeil was traded to the Athletics, joining his new team in Sacramento. The 33-year-old utility player is expected to fill the second base role and mentor the young lineup.
Additionally, several Long Beach natives reached contract agreements with their MLB organizations this offseason to avoid salary arbitration.
Trevor Megill, a 2025 All-Star, signed a $4.7 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, while his brother, Tylor Megill, agreed to $2.5 million with the New York Mets. Spencer Steer, a Millikan High alum, signed a $4 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds.
The 2026 MLB season opens on March 25, with the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants facing off, followed by a full slate of 14 games the next day.
