Durham Police are introducing a new initiative to help track individuals with dementia who may go missing, offering families peace of mind. The initiative involves the distribution of bright yellow wristbands containing essential information. These wristbands, funded by the office of Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen, will include the person's name, emergency contact number, and a QR code linking to the Herbert Protocol, a national scheme used by emergency services. The protocol provides details about the individual, their past, habits, and regular destinations. This innovative approach aims to reduce the risk of harm and facilitate the safe return of those with dementia. While some may argue that the wristbands could be seen as a form of tracking, supporters like Lorraine Dunn, a 72-year-old with mixed dementia, believe the benefits outweigh the concerns.
