Delbarton Dominates: Capturing a Third Consecutive N.J. Catholic School Duals Title!
It's official: Delbarton, the top-ranked team in New Jersey, has once again proven their wrestling prowess, securing their third straight title at the N.J. Catholic School Duals. This year, they faced a formidable opponent in the No. 4 Christian Brothers, ultimately prevailing with a score of 41-26. This victory marks a hat-trick for Delbarton, solidifying their dominance in the prestigious dual tournament.

This year's final saw Delbarton go up against a new challenger, with the tournament hosted at Christian Brothers' home turf in Lincroft. Previously, St. Peter's Prep had been the runner-up for two consecutive seasons. The article was written by Ryan Patti of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com.

Delbarton showcased their depth and resilience, even without the presence of four key starters, including junior state champion Ryan DeGeorge, junior state medalists PJ Terranova and Gabe Logan, and star freshman Nico Marchetti. Despite these absences, the Green Wave's victory pushes their season record to an impressive 8-0, with five of those wins against some of the nation's best squads.
"It doesn’t get any easier," Delbarton head coach Bryan Stoll commented on the team's success. "CBA is now a Top-10 team in the country, St. Joe’s is a Top-20 team in the country, St. Peter’s is in there and Bergen Catholic is in there. I’m really proud of the kids."
Terranova and Marchetti did wrestle in Delbarton’s 49-13 semifinals win over No. 3 St. Peter’s Prep earlier in the afternoon. DeGeorge and Logan both wrestled in Friday’s Pool B play and Stoll added that all four will be evaluated during next week.
Winning Formula: Delbarton secured eight victories in the 14 bouts, with an impressive seven of those wins coming with bonus points. Junior state champion Cam Sontz and junior heavyweight Auggie Moser accepted forfeits, while sophomore Braden Jones and senior CJ Betz won by fall. Sophomore Tommy Marchetti and senior NJ.com Wrestler of the Year Jayden James secured technical fall victories, and sophomore Nick Schwartz earned a major decision.
The only bout win by decision came from senior Trevor Jones at 157. Jones, a Davidson commit, battled to an ultimate tiebreaker against fellow senior Jimmy Jakub, ultimately riding him out in the final 30 seconds. Jones credits his conditioning, stating, "One of my best attributes is my gas tank...It’s something we definitely strive for in the room with extra sprints after practice to be ready to go the full nine minutes."
Delbarton's success wasn't limited to the final. They also dominated St. Peter's Prep, winning 10 bouts, and achieved shutouts against Holy Cross Prep (81-0) and Red Bank Catholic (68-0) on Friday.
A Glimpse into the Future: This tournament has become a valuable preview of how the Non-Public A division could unfold in February. However, it's worth noting that the postseason doesn't always mirror these results, as evidenced by St. Joseph (Mont.) winning state titles in the years surrounding Delbarton's 2024 championship.
Coach Stoll acknowledged the strength of the competition, stating, "I think there are six really, really good teams in Non-Public A... We weren’t healthy today, but we put a team out that could win. Once you get to sectionals, it’s a little more all hands on deck. We’ll enjoy this today, but it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if CBA was the team we run into in the quarterfinals, semifinals or finals. They’re building something really special there."
What's Next for Delbarton? The Green Wave will next compete in the Doc Buchanan Tournament in Clovis, California, followed by the Jack Welch Duals and duals against Faith Christian Academy (PA), Malvern Prep (PA), Blair, and Wyoming Seminary (PA).
Senior Trevor Jones said, "This team is really special...We have a great brotherhood. Losing [in the state title] last year is always in the back of our minds. And my freshman year, even that still stings. We’ll get it done this year though."
