The quiet race for coveted PGA TOUR Signature Event spots just concluded, and some familiar faces are in, while others are left wondering 'what if?'
While the thunderous roars of the WM Phoenix Open's playoff drama echoed across TPC Scottsdale, a more subtle, yet equally intense, competition was playing out on the back nine. This event marked the final opportunity for players to earn their place in the inaugural Aon Swing 5 for the 2026 PGA TOUR season. This crucial initiative awards the top-five players, who aren't otherwise exempt, with guaranteed spots in the next two Signature Events: the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
As Sunday evening settled, the calculations were clear. Pierceson Coody, Ryo Hisatsune, Jake Knapp, Matt McCarty, and Patrick Rodgers have successfully secured these highly sought-after invitations. Just on the outside looking in were Sahith Theegala, Andrew Putnam, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Nicolai Højgaard.

Coody's Remarkable Resurgence
Pierceson Coody has claimed the top position, capping off an exceptional start to his season with another top-10 finish in Phoenix. After a challenging 2024 rookie campaign where he missed his first five cuts, Coody has made a significant comeback. Following a year on the Korn Ferry Tour, the former world No. 1 amateur is now demonstrating the immense potential many have anticipated. He's kicked off 2026 with three consecutive top-20 finishes, including a strong second-place performance at the Farmers Insurance Open. There, he posted an impressive 16-under par over four rounds at Torrey Pines – a score that would have won six of the previous seven editions of that tournament! While Justin Rose was in a league of his own that week, Coody's consistent play has perfectly positioned him for this Aon Swing 5 opportunity. He now enters the early season Signature Events with considerable momentum.
Hisatsune Confirms His Breakout
Ryo Hisatsune mirrored Coody's T10 finish in Phoenix, and also their shared runner-up finish at Torrey Pines, comfortably securing the second spot in the Aon Swing 5 standings. This 23-year-old, who narrowly retained his PGA TOUR card last fall, now finds himself heading to two of the tour's most prestigious early-season events. In his third full season, Hisatsune fulfilled a personal dream by playing in the final group alongside his idol, Hideki Matsuyama, on Saturday. The Japanese sensation, who earned his tour card via the DP World Tour after an outstanding 2023 Rookie of the Year campaign, has shown flashes of brilliance in his first two-plus seasons. However, until now, these flashes hadn't translated into Signature Event access, with his only previous appearance being the 2025 RBC Heritage. That all changes over the next two weeks.
Knapp Secures His Spot, McCarty and Rodgers Squeeze Through
Jake Knapp clinched the third position with a solid solo eighth-place finish in Scottsdale. Already qualified for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am by virtue of his 63rd place in the FedExCup Fall standings, Knapp has now removed any doubt about his participation in The Genesis Invitational as well.
The final two spots, however, were a nail-biting affair. Matt McCarty, who benefited from a runner-up finish at The American Express, missed the cut in Phoenix and had to anxiously watch the leaderboard projections. Patrick Rodgers, relying on a third-place finish at the Sony Open and three made cuts this season, managed to hang on by the narrowest of margins.
But here's where it gets interesting... Patrick Rodgers is no stranger to these qualification pathways. Last season, he leveraged both the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 programs to earn five Signature Event starts, most notably a T3 at The Genesis Invitational that propelled him a remarkable 85 spots up the FedExCup standings.
Big Names Just Shy of the Mark
Under normal circumstances, Sahith Theegala missing out would be the most talked-about story. After being within the projected qualifying spots entering Sunday, the California native, who has been on an impressive comeback trail after a neck injury disrupted his 2025 season, slipped out of the top five with a closing bogey. It was an unfortunate end to a determined effort, but not without reward. Late Sunday afternoon, Theegala received the final sponsor exemption into the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, likely a testament to his consistent start to the season with finishes of T31, T8, T7, and T17. He will continue his return to form at the year's first Signature Event.
And this is the part most people miss... Michael Thorbjornsen and Nicolai Højgaard needed near-runner-up performances to crack the top five, and they certainly flirted with the possibility. Thorbjornsen even held the solo lead after an eagle on the par-5 15th, but bogeys on the infamous 16th and water on the drivable 17th led to a T3 finish. Højgaard narrowly missed a lengthy birdie putt on the 72nd hole that, if made, would have put him into a playoff.
