The 1970s: A Musical Revolution
The 1970s were a transformative decade for popular music, setting the stage for the 1980s with a diverse range of sounds and styles. From the countercultural echoes of Woodstock to the emergence of new wave, the 1970s witnessed the birth of punk, prog-rock, glam, disco, and hip-hop, as well as a resurgence of country, rock and roll revival, and folk. Classic rock dominated the charts, showcasing its show-stopping appeal.
This era was characterized by a unique blend of influences, with some artists looking forward and others reminiscing. The punks drew inspiration from the sugar rush of glam, but they were also fed up with the hippy residue that dominated the charts. As a result, they embraced a more urgent and fun approach, unconcerned with the double denimed seriousness of the 1970s.
Despite the rapid changes in the 1970s, it was impossible to predict the rock and pop landscape of the 1980s. MTV, superficiality, and mass-commercialism would rule the day, while political revolutions swept across the Western world. Yet, a handful of musical visionaries were able to shape the era's sonic path, chasing the shock of the new and forming trends that would define the 1980s.
In honor of these pop pioneers, we present five songs that played a pivotal role in shaping the 1980s music soundtrack.
